June 26, 2025When Productivity Drops: What to Do When Your Heart’s Not in It
We’ve All Been There
Let’s not sugar-coat it—there are days when showing up for work feels like dragging yourself through mud. Your brain’s foggy, your list is long, and your heart? Nowhere near in it. And that’s not laziness. That’s real. I’ve seen it in myself, in my teams, and across so many SMEs I’ve supported. Productivity slumps are part of the journey, especially when you care about the work you do. This isn’t about plastering on a smile and “getting on with it.” It’s about being honest with where you’re at—and taking steps that are practical, human, and sustainable.
Why You’re Feeling Stuck (And Why That’s OK)
First things first—don’t beat yourself up.
A lack of motivation isn’t always a sign something’s broken. Sometimes it’s a sign you’ve been pushing too hard. Or you’ve lost sight of why you’re doing what you do. Or maybe you’re simply bored—and your role or routine needs a shake-up.
Understanding the “why” behind your lack of drive can help you move forward. And if the process isn’t working anymore? You know what I say—blow it up and start again.
How to Keep Moving When Motivation’s Missing
Now, I’m not saying slog through for the sake of it. But there are smart, simple ways to keep the wheels turning even when your engine’s not exactly firing on all cylinders:
- Strip it back – What really needs to get done today? Prioritise that.
- Break the big into small – Sometimes one small win is all it takes to build momentum.
- Work in short bursts – 25 minutes of focus is better than 2 hours of pretending.
- Be kind to yourself – You don’t need to be ‘on’ 100% of the time. No one is.
This is about working with your energy, not against it.
Reconnecting with What Matters
One of the quickest ways to kill productivity? Losing sight of the bigger picture.
I’ve always believed that business isn’t just about numbers—it’s about purpose. So if you’re feeling stuck, ask yourself: What am I actually working towards? Who does this impact? Why did I start this in the first place?
Get back to the reason that drives you—and let that pull you forward, even if only slightly.
Sometimes, You Just Need to Rest
Let me say it louder for the people in the back: rest is not a weakness.
Too many business owners and leaders I work with feel guilty taking a proper break. But when your mind and body are screaming for rest, pushing through isn’t noble—it’s self-sabotage.
Take the pause. Step back. Come back sharper.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
I’ve seen firsthand how much difference it makes when someone has a solid sounding board. Whether that’s a coach, a manager, or a trusted peer—talk it out. Share the weight. Ask for help.
You’re not weak for needing support. You’re smart for seeking it.
Get Real, Not Perfect
If you’re not feeling it right now, that’s alright. You’re not broken—you’re human. We can’t be all-systems-go every single day, and anyone who tells you otherwise hasn’t worked in the real world.
When your heart’s not in it, take stock. Get curious. Strip it back. And make one small move forward. Because sometimes, that’s all it takes to get things going again.
And remember: building something that lasts isn’t about constant hustle—it’s about showing up, honestly, even on the hard days.
If you or your team are stuck in a rut, let’s talk. Together, we can reignite purpose, rework what’s not serving you, and find a rhythm that works for your business.
👉 Let’s build momentum that lasts.
